AeroVironment Surges to All-Time Highs: A Closer Look

AeroVironment (AVAV), a prominent manufacturer and supplier of drones and missile systems, is basking in the glow of all-time highs following yet another stellar earnings report. Fueled by strong demand across its product portfolio, particularly for its portable Switchblade drones, AVAV has delivered a remarkable beat-and-raise performance.

Record Revenue and Upbeat Guidance

The U.S. military’s deployment of AVAV’s Switchblade drones to Ukraine, where they function as guided missiles, has contributed to record-breaking revenue in the company’s Loitering Munition Systems segment. Despite ongoing deliberations in Congress regarding additional assistance to Ukraine, AVAV remains bullish, with its backlog increasing by 12% year-over-year to $462.8 million and visibility nearing 100%. Consequently, the company has revised its FY24 guidance upwards, forecasting higher EPS and revenue compared to its previous outlook.

Loitering Munition Systems: A Standout Segment

While AVAV’s bullish outlook encompasses various products and customers, the Loitering Munition Systems segment stands out, with revenue more than doubling year-over-year. AVAV anticipates continued growth in this segment, citing active discussions with the U.S. government for a significant multi-year contract for Switchblade, as well as interest from twenty other countries.

Meeting Sky-High Demand

To address the burgeoning demand, AVAV plans to scale up its manufacturing capacity gradually. However, the company asserts that it currently possesses adequate capacity for the next few years.

Dominance of Unmanned Systems Segment

Despite the phenomenal growth of Loitering Munition Systems, the Unmanned Systems (UMS) segment remains AVAV’s largest by a significant margin. With Q3 revenue of $113.3 million and a respectable growth rate of 23%, UMS continues to be a key revenue driver for the company. The Puma drone, a small drone offered by AVAV, accounts for approximately half of UMS’s total revenue, with sustained demand expected to persist.

Margin Expansion and Future Outlook

The robust demand and top-line growth are not only driving revenue but also expanding margins. With product revenue constituting a larger proportion of total revenue, gross margin has expanded by 200 basis points year-over-year. AVAV anticipates product revenues to remain above 80% of total revenue in the foreseeable future, indicating sustained growth momentum.

Geopolitical Climate Driving Demand

The volatile geopolitical landscape worldwide is fueling heightened demand for AVAV’s drones and missile systems, a trend expected to persist. The company is well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities and maintain its growth trajectory.
