HPQ Silicon PUREVAP Gen3 Quartz Reduction Reactor pilot plan project hits 80% of milestones

Bernard Tourillon, CEO of HPQ Silicon, joined Steve Darling of Proactive to discuss the company’s PUREVAP Gen3 Quartz Reduction Reactor (QRR) pilot plant project.

In order to address environmental concerns in material production, this project aims to use green engineering processes for the production of silicon and silica materials.

According to Tourillon, the project has met significant milestones and approximately 80% of its primary objectives have been successfully validated. One of these accomplishments is the process’s impressive 99.5% silicon purity (2N+), which is higher than the silicon’s commercially acceptable purity limit.

Notably, production has increased significantly, reaching 2,500 times the PUREVAP Gen2 QRR’s capacity. The method has also succeeded in producing 3N+ silicon—also known as battery-grade silicon—in a single step.

Another noteworthy accomplishment is the reduced feedstock usage, with the process requiring 25% fewer raw materials than traditional carbothermic processes, which use a 6:1 ratio of raw materials to produce 1 ton of metallurgical-grade silicon.

The project’s sponsor, PyroGenesis, has said the modified crucible will be delivered to the testing facility soon. If everything goes as planned, the silicon pour should be finished the following week.

The pursuit of environmentally friendly and productive silicon production methods by HPQ Silicon has advanced significantly as a result of these successes. The company is positioned as a cutting-edge player in the silicon materials industry thanks to the achievement of high silicon purity, scalability, and minimal feedstock usage, which is in line with more general environmental and sustainability objectives.
